As sure as the sun will rise tomorrow—unless it’s an overcast day, of course—I know for a fact that any book by the extremely talented Mr. Starkey is going to be a book I’ll end up devouring. It must be noted that prior to even starting, the blurbs alone entice me, and once I find that little bit of time to delve between even one page, it’s a given it will be a book I’ll thoroughly enjoy. This one was no exception.

Mr. Charon would seem to be predominantly aimed at the young adult market, however, it is by no means restrained to that age group. At all. Not if you take my age into account, at least. Not only was the premise for this ‘scary’ story fascinating, the characters were believable, all with diverse backgrounds, whether it incorporated standards of living, religious beliefs, or family abuse. No one was painted with the ‘perfect’ brush—as we all know, real life is by no means ever perfect.

In short, Mr. Charon veered in a completely different direction to what I’m used to from Mr. Starkey, and it was fabulous, intriguing, and captivating. And although I mentioned the word ‘scary’, which it is, unless you aren’t the type of person who’s ever the least bit phased with the paranormal and strange creatures, it’s not all scary. But it is gripping, and it is suspenseful. For me, in the end, all I kept thinking about was…be careful what you wish for. It might just happen. And then what? Not everyone has that someone who has their back.

Thank you, Mr. Starkey, for the opportunity to read Mr. Charon. Yet again, you’ve made me a very happy reader, and an eternal fan of your work.

…Rich, vibrant, descriptive language. Characters with depth, imbued with loyalty, courage and strength or touched with madness for power and evincing raw brutality. Treachery, betrayal, intrigue at every turn…

The Councilman Reviews

Bob Doerr, Military Writers Society of America

In his book, The Councilman, author Glenn Starkey has penned another fast and enjoyable read. Set in eastern Texas in the 1950s, this story is about a veteran’s search for his mother’s murderer. Our protagonist, Cory Hunter Bramley, is a Korean War veteran who returns to his hometown and discovers that his mother is only one of several women brutally raped and murdered in a similar manner during the sixteen years he has been away from the town. Cory gets a job at the town’s general hardware store and soon meets a wide variety of both good and evil individuals in the small town. Cory befriends another newcomer to town, a World War II vet who survived the Bataan Death March in the Philippines and helps him get employment with him at the store. This friend is named Moses, carries a bible, recites scripture, and seems to know things about the future that he shouldn’t. I found the book’s conclusion somewhat unexpected and, as expected, satisfying. I recommend this book.

William R. Skidmore, Amazon Reviewer

I enjoyed the pace and characters. They were well rounded and supported the plot, but not contrived. The story had a sense of predictability about where it would lead, but there were twists that made the story even more engaging. The narrative also captures a past that portrays the decency, behavior and attitude of a faded era.

Solomon’s Men Reviews

Military Writers Society of America

Silver Medal 2012 Mystery/Thriller Award

Although I’m a stickler for pace, I enjoyed the vividness of descriptions and depth of character development that the author displayed in exchange for slowing from a sprint to a trot. The style shines while supporting a story of intrigue around an ancient religious relic sought by memorable characters.

Solomon’s Men is a masterful display of imagery supported by memorable characters. The protagonist is an ex-Force Recon Marine-turned-thief with a special needs child, a conscience, and a tormenting past. He’s chased by commando-monks and underground antique dealers. At first, we don’t know what he steals, but we know it’s important. As the plot unfolds, we are treated to deeper insights about the relic and the peppery and troubled crew who seek it.

After 300+ exciting pages sleuthing and killing, our hero finds his way to the ending worthy of his character.

Solomon’s Men earned praise from the Military Writers Society of America for good reason. It’s a moving story and an excellent book.

Midwest Book Review

“… genuinely suspenseful… a cascade of power struggles… Exciting and unpredictable, Solomon’s Men is highly recommended as an original action/adventure thriller.”

Through The Storms Reviews

Andrew W. Hall, author, historian, DeadConfederates.com, Regional Marine Archaeological Steward for the Texas Historical Commission

…An important and valuable work…genuinely impressed with the completeness of the manuscript, as well as its organization…a work that, in my view, combines both the best of first-person observations and conventional historical narrative to understand Slover’s experiences as part of the larger sweep of American history during that period.

Year Of The Ram Reviews

Sandra Valente, Novel Review Café

…it felt as if a hand had made its way out of the novel, gently grabbed me around the neck and pulled me into its story until such time as what was being told had come to an end. After accomplishing what it set out to do, the hand would then draw me out of the world I was in, pat my cheek, and disappear leaving me sitting there in wonder…

Readers Favorite 5 Star Review

“…It was Glenn Starkey’s ability to capture humanity at its worst and at its very best that touched me so deeply… Where some authors write a great story you can’t put down, Glenn Starkey weaves a richly coloured tapestry and breathes life into every thread of the story. Every sentence, every paragraph, every description, and every character matters…”

Amazon Moon Reviews

Nicholas Guild, New York Times Best Selling Author

“Amazon Moon is the sort of novel that grabs you by the throat on the first page and doesn’t let go until the last. It is an exciting story and, at the same time, something more. It is a fable about one man’s redemption, his rediscovery of innocence.”

W. H. McDonald Jr., American Authors Association & Military Writers Association of america

Wow – I do not know how to start – this novel was truly a ride through lots of scary and emotional stuff that was delivered so skillfully by the author Glenn Starkey. Not sure if this is truly a war story or a sci-fi story but the two cross over into great entertainment. This would be one incredible action movie for sure! “Amazon Moon” is deeply layered in emotions and themes of both revenge and redemption. The human elements of his characters are sharply focused but layered as well.

The book is a true epic journey – from childhood, manhood in the war, betrayals, death, destruction, jail, and finally an opportunity for redemption and a new life – but it all comes with a heavy price. The war elements of the book are like Rambo on steroids but when the story switches gears to the jungles of South America it takes on an evil sci-fi world of devils and evil – then this book really begins to rock and roll. There is no one else writing these kinds of stories – this is a 100% an original tale.

If you are a fan of either military or sci-fi genres, then it will work for you – it is not a book for the faint of heart looking for a soft leisurely reading experience – this will be an emotional workout for any reader!
